The Pill may cause antioxidant level reduction

Filed under: Prevention, Research By my own admission, I don't really know all that much about The Pill. I'm a guy, so the extent of my knowledge on the topic of female contraception is about as broad as as Nicole Ricci's shoulders. Fortunately, however, I can read (no, really, applause is not necessary), and I recently came across some information about the possible dangers of taking birth control pills. Based on a study in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, taking the pill may lower your levels of Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamin E; two antioxidants that are known to help prevent such diseases as heart disease and cancer. The Pill appears to somehow reduce cells' lipid levels, which may cause to a lowering in antioxidant levels. This information comes after a study of 55 women -- 15 of whom were on The Pill and 40 who were not. A 23% reduction in the two aforementioned antioxidants was found in the women who took The Pill. Though in no way does this prove conclusively that a correlation exists between The Pill and antioxidant levels, it certainly raises the question that it may. To help battle against this antioxidant reduction, you may want to try supplementing your diet with a multi-vitamin or adding whole grains, nuts or several other foods that can help keep everything in check.
