Parenting without a license: why are some parents immune to assistance?

(Warning: language) Laura Shaw at Morphing into Mama has a great story about how she thought she knew everything before her baby, Tod-lar, was born. Once he was out of her stomach, however, she realized that “I didn’t know shit from fuck.” Laura volunteered at an area daycare and sought out other forms of parental assistance, and eventually felt comfortable in her role as a mother. Now, however, she’s mystified that other parents seem reluctant to accept advice and assistance, no matter how tactfully she offers either. ” What makes us as parents think we know the right way to respond to every behavioral issue that arises? What’s with this ‘don’t tell me how to raise my kids’ attitude?... Am I the only one who feels like they’re parenting without a license?” Personally, I thought “parenting without a license” was a universal feeling. Perhaps that’s why many of us are so touchy about what we perceive as critiques of our parenting. We’re so worried that we’re going to do indelible damage to our young charges, we flinch at the mere hint we may be grooming a Future Serial Killer of America. Or is there some other factor at work here? Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments © 2005 Weblogs, Inc.
