You might assume from Constantine and Batman Begins that superhero films are suitable only for tortured existentialists who find Antonioni too frivolous, so it's a relief to note that Fantastic Four is family-friendly, primary-coloured fluff, no darker or deeper than the early-1960s Marvel comics it's based on. But as welcome as this change of tone might be, a small dollop of darkness might have helped. Fantastic Four is so light that it ends up with almost no menace or danger, and less action than you'd get from the Famous Five.
