Some words on prescription drug advertising

Filed under: Gripes, Television In a recent blog post the Association of National Advertisers came out in favor of direct-to-consumer (DTC) prescription drug advertising. Their stance comes in response to Commercial Alert's call for an end to such advertising. Frankly, I couldn't agree with the ANA more. When I walk into my doctor's office and see the walls adorned with Pfizer posters, a Pfizer rug on the floor, the receptionist decked out in a Pfizer jacket, and my doctor's Pfizer-brand station wagon parked out front, I know that I'm in the best possible care. Several doctors who were surveyed said television ads prompted patients to contact them about illnesses which they might not have been inclined to inquire about previously. Again, this is true. I call my doctor at least twenty times a week with different ailments I think I might have, and he recommends some kind of Pfizer medication every time. One time the chain fell off my bicycle and he recommend Pfizer for that, also. I fail to see the problem with DTC advertising, though maybe another prescription would help my clarity, as long as it's from one of the big drug companies. They always have such nice hats.
