All tumors are not the same

Filed under: Ovarian Cancer It appears as though low malignant potential (LMP) ovarian tumors, and even serious low-grade ovarian cancer, may not have so much in common with the high-grade (more aggressive) type of ovarian cancer as previously thought. A new multi-team study, published in the 11/15/05 issue of Cancer Research, shows that serious low-grade malignant tumors bear more in common, genetically, with LMP’s than they do with serious high-grade tumors. A summary of the paper states that over 40,000 genes were analyzed in each of 80 different tumor samples. The evidence suggests that low-grade tumors may develop from LMP’s, but that high-grade tumors are genetically different enough that they are not likely developed from low-grade tumors, but rather are sparked by a different cause. Currently, the treatment is the same for all types of ovarian tumors; first surgery, then chemotherapy. I hope to see changes in this ritual as a result of this news. With more study, we will be able to give more specific therapies for each particular type of cancer. I expect and hope to see this trend expanded to the treatment of all cancers in general, as scientists become better able to understand the specifics of what causes various cancers to progress.
