Some Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin - Interview!

13th Nov 2006, 16:29 GMT

Filed under: NY Doll Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin - trying saying that, well, trying saying that two times fast and I'll give you a cookie. SSLYBY was definitely the buzz band during CMJ last week. Not only is their name completely original, random and unforgettable, but they seemed to be playing more shows during the festival than humanly possible. It was hard not to notice them when I saw their name on almost every single bill. Needless to say I never got to see them, but these four boys from Springfield, Missouri were always on my mind. "Dang, what's their deal?" I kept asking myself? Finally, I listened to one of their tracks and I understood -- it's some of the sweetest and catchiest music I've ever heard. It's summertime and those beautifully sunny days in the dead of winter. It's barbeques and picnics. It's the reason why people smile when listening to music. And it's also the reason why I tracked down Philip Dickey (drums, guitar, vocals) from the band and asked him a few questions. Here's the questions Philip was kind enough to answer, along with an mp3 from their latest album, Broom, on Polyvinyl Records (home to that other band that puts smiles on faces, of Montreal). SSLYBY - Oregon Girl How many shows did you play during CMJ? Was this your first time at CMJ? I think we played 6 shows...Yah, it was our first time. There is a lot of hype surrounding your band. For example that quote from Spin saying SSLYBY "...could succeed the Shins as the band that 'will change your life.'" What do you think of that? Weird? Awesome? Too much pressure? The internet hype makes me nervous for a few reasons. A lot of people just think we're an internet band...like we planned this out. But we've been [a band] for 6 years and no one liked us until 2 years ago. I don't feel too much pressure about the music...that's the easy part...because people either like it or they don't like. I do feel a lot of pressure about how our band gets marketed. Sometimes I'd rather be a wedding band than a cool indie band. How did you come up with your band name? I was in high school and I was being stupid. (*NY Doll's note: That's actually my middle name - NY "I was in high school and I was being stupid" Doll). What are your day jobs? I work for a temp agency and I'm a butler for some rich people. John Robert works at a coffeehouse. Will is in charge of 4 cats. What's your favorite food? Anything at Mike's Cafe in Springfield. (*NY Doll's note: They even mention this place on their website. I love anyone who feels this passionately about food.) What tv show would you love to hear your music be the soundtrack for? (Could be a canceled show or a recent one.) Star Trek: Next Gen (*NY Doll's note: That's "Generation" for those of you non-Trekkies. Personally I've seen every episode but please don't spread that around the internet) What was the best band you saw during CMJ? The Slits...but we didn't see the play. We saw them in a little apartment and they were real nice. Finally, if you could tour with any band, who would it be? Nirvana Permalink | Email this | Comments
