USATODAY.com - SAN FRANCISCO - A growing number of computer-chip makers don't own any factories, choosing instead to outsource all manufacturing. Factory-free chipmakers brought in $42 billion in revenue last year, 18% of the overall chip market, says the Fabless Semiconductor Association, a trade group. (Chip factories are known as fabrication plants, or "fabs.") That's more than double the $18 billion in sales booked five years ago, the FSA says.
