Are Humans and Sea Urchins Kissing Cousins?

14th Nov 2006, 16:37 GMT

Filed under: Health & Medicine, Flora & Fauna, Pacific Scientists are telling us that humans and the California purple sea urchin have related genetic counter-parts upwards of 70%. This is in contrast to the fruit fly which has only 40%. In fact over 7,000 genes are identical between urchins and humans. Researchers are hoping urchins may hold cures for human diseases. For one, urchins have a pre-programmed immune system which skips the "acquired" part that we humans must undergo. If you have a small child in your household you know all too well that we never stop "acquiring" new immunities. Even more, humans and urchins share genes and proteins for senses like hearing and smell. Whatever...I'm still not fond of the purple urchin since they've overrun the Southern California reef system.
