Cancer patient dies unexpectedly of MRSA contracted in hospital

13th Nov 2005, 20:48 GMT

Filed under: Stories John Hughes, 66, a retired British gardner, died suddenly last July. Two months earlier, he had collapsed in a store, and been taken to the hospital. He had cancer, and the coroner (who was also named John Hughes, and who knew the patient), ruled the death as accidental. However, reports of an inquest are that Hughes actually contracted the MRSA "superbug" while in the hospital, and that the bacteria was the cause of death. The coroner pointed out that even if Hughes had not contracted the bacteria, he probably would have died in a matter of days from the cancer. (Ed.note: Thanks, Sarah, for the comment!)
