Cancer treatment aims to stop tumors from metastasising

Filed under: Prevention A new study in the journal Nature reports this week says that scientists have discovered how tumors spread. This news, obviously, could simplify the treatment of cancer. And cancer cells in and of themselves are not what kills: It's their rampant spreading and taking over the body's organs that makes cancer cells so deadly. Apparently, tumors are clever and set about spreading in a pretty pre-meditated way. It's not random; it's deliberate. Apparently, tumors send off little messengers through the blood and set up camp at different areas of the body, then fill in the intervals of body with the cancer cells. The cancer cells are actually sent by the tumor, through the bloodstream, to the other site.
