Baby, U.S. citizen, needs lung transplants, parents need green cards

Now this is a sticky situation. Mum is from Great Britain. Dad is Canadian. He came to the U.S. to work in Atlanta as an IT management consultant on a North American Fair Trade Agreement visa. The couple has a baby while living and working in the U.S., so their baby is a citizen. The baby develops severe health problems, so dad can’t go back to Canada to renew his visa. Desperate attempts to alert the U.S. about what the situation was elicit this comment: “We certainly empathize with everyone who comes forward and has problems that compel them to try and stay in the United States, whether financial or health, but that empathy doesn’t give us the leeway to take shortcuts with the law,” from a representative at U.S. Immigration Services. Yes, that empathy bloody well does. Bureaucrats take shortcuts with the law all the time. There are no cases set in stone. Exceptions are made. This is an extenuating circumstance. The couple got their mailed-in paperwork done in time, but were still denied an extended visa, so the dad had to quit his job, return to Canada, and re-enter the U.S. as a visitor. At least they let him back in. So, now the couple is desperate to be able to work in the U.S. where their baby must remain waiting for a double lung transplant. Their medical bills are mounting. The baby is a U.S. citizen. You can get a Green Card for marrying a citizen, but not giving birth to one? What the hell is up with that?
