TigerDirect Roars Over "Tiger"

2nd Nov 2005, 15:14 GMT

I just read over at BetaNews that reseller TigerDirect is suing Apple over the use of "Tiger" to describe Mac OS X 10.4, which releases tomorrow, by the way. Reports BetaNews: "TigerDirect's main contention is that Apple has flooded the Internet with the word 'tiger' as it relates to computers, which has knocked the retailer from the top of search results on Google and Yahoo." OK. So I searched for "tiger" on Google, which brought back the Tiger Information Center as the top hit, followed by TigerDirect. Tiger Haven came in third with Apple's Tiger a lowly fourth. Search for "tiger, computers," put TigerDirect in the top three spots, again with Apple's Tiger coming in fourth. Search for "tiger, software" brought back the reseller in top spot followed by Paper Tiger Software. Over at Yahoo!, Mac OS X Tiger claimed the top non-sponsored result in a search for "tiger," followed by U.S. Census Bureau Tiger/Line. TigerDirect placed eighth, behind the likes of Tiger Information Center, Tiger Woods and Tiger Magazine. My question: Why single out Apple, when a government agency, non-profit organization, famous golf pro and magazine place before TigerDirect? Got to ask: Is it any coincidence that TigerDirect is a Windows reseller? I did a search for "Mac OS X" over at TigerDirect. Nothing. A search for "Macintosh" brought up to two Windows PCs, one a Sony. A search for "Apple" brought back two HP iPods. `Nough said.
