Empire Strikes Silver

Producer Joel Silver has picked up the movie rights to Empire, a forthcoming videogame series and novel developed by Chair Entertainment Group and science fiction author Orson Scott Card. The Hollywood Reporter scoops that Silver Pictures and Warner Bros. have hopes of adapting the property into an action film. The story reportedly revolves around a near-future scenario where the country has been plunged into civil war after the White House is bombed and the president assassinated. As fighting spreads through major cities, a lone operative framed for the attacks rises up to clear his name and find out what really happened. "I couldn't think of anyone in Hollywood that could make this story better than Joel Silver," Donald Mustard told THR. "He gets the franchise. He understands the story. And I think he's really good at not just cross-marketing a franchise, but making this type of a film." The Empire game prototype was created by Chair's Donald and Geremy Mustard and Card. The game is conceived as a first-person shooter. It reportedly runs on Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3. Card will write the story for the game. The novel is set to release on November 28th. Mustard, who is not a colonel as far as we know (waa waaaa), added that the group plans to follow up the first book with a comic book series, which will tell a different story than the novel and start earlier in the time line of events than the book. The movie will follow and then the videogame. The parties involved hope to coordinate the release of the film with the launch of the game. "This approach allows us to craft a very intricate story across multiple mediums," Mustard told the trade. "The book franchise tells a great book story, but you can get way more detail in the comic book franchise than you could ever get in a book. We can do so many different things in the video game that you could never do in a book or a movie. These things will all work in conjunction to support each other." Silver Pictures is looking for a screenwriter to adapt the film
