Art therapy for cancer patients

5th Jan 2006, 17:27 GMT

Filed under: Alternative Therapies Cancer patients at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago have been taking art classes to help with their therapy process. Judith Paice, director of the hospital's cancer pain program and a study co-author, has created a program for terminally ill patients to aid in their coping process. The fifty patients are asked to rate their pain and anxiety levels before class and again after the sessions. On the whole, both pain and anxiety levels are shown to typically decrease by at least half during the art classes. "It's not simply making art, it's not simply gluing some sequins on a piece of paper," says Paice. "The adult patients are able to express their fears, their emotions, their concerns, their wishes and their dreams in another manner" Over a four month period the art therapy has been shown to help alleviate eight of nine symptoms in patients being treated for cancer, including pain, depression, poor appetite and fatigue.
