Gay officer caught in pension right distribution

27th Nov 2005, 21:19 GMT

Last fall after discovering she had lung cancer, Laurel Hester decided to leave the pension from her position with the Ocean County, N.J., prosecutor's office to her life partner, Stacie Andree. And although many New Jersey towns allow such benefits to be extended to domestic partners, Ocean County is not one of them. Ms. Hester has made a request to the freeholders only to have it declined because "it would violate the sanctity of marriage," and that it is also, "defying the spirit of New Jersey law. " The unfairness of the situation is heart breaking; however at least one person sees it as an opportunity, "There is a bigger context here," said Steven Goldstein, chairman of Garden State Equality, a New Jersey gay rights group. "This only helps the cause of gay marriage because people are seeing that half-steps like civil unions are not providing people with real protection." In response to all the hoopla, Ms. Hester says, "I'm not looking for marriage, and I'm not looking to be a poster girl, I just want the same rights as people who are in a heterosexual relationship."
