Elevating elements of uncertainty into an aesthetic all its own

A surfeit of filmmakers has aspired to throw light on American foreign policy in the greater Middle East of late. It hardly comes as a surprise that politically engaged directors should be drawn to the subject, given the news media's pliant - or at least belatedly critical - response to the Bush Doctrine's brand of uninformed military unilateralism.
