Kenya to host 8-country $35-mn Indian Ocean fisheries project

13th Nov 2006, 21:13 GMT

Kenya will play host to the World Bank-funded $35-mn South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project. The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) in Mombasa will be the regional management unit headquarters of the project, involving eight countries in the southwestern sector of the Indian Ocean. The member countries are Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Seychelles, Mauritius, Mozambique, Madagascar, the Comoros and France through the Reunion islands. Due to the lack of a functioning government and the increased piracy on its high seas, Somalia will participate as an observer. The idea of the project originated at a meeting held in Mozambique in 2000 under a Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant to discuss a strategy for sharing sustainable development of South West Indian Ocean marine resources. KMFRI deputy director Dr Renison Ruwa, who has participated in the whole process, said the institution was ready to host the project. In January 2002, the International Development Association (IDA), representing GEF, signed an agreement with the government of Mozambique to co-ordinate the preparation of a project brief in a collaborative and transparent country-driven process. It was formally declared that the project would adopt a scientific and capacity-building approach as a first step in promoting a regional model of environmentally sustainable management of fisheries.
