Walk to School Week Begins

Walking for transportation is part of an active lifestyle that can help lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and colon cancer and increase one's sense of well being. That is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which supports The International Walk to School Week. The effort, which starts today, is a global move to encourage children, parents, teachers, and community leaders to celebrate the benefits of walking and the need to create communities that are safe for pedestrians. According to the CDC, last year an estimated 3 million walkers in 36 countries observed the event by walking to school. Low rates of walking and physical activity, coupled with a 300 percent increase in the number of overweight children since the early 1970s, helped fuel the initiative.
