The Indian owners of ancient Manhattan did no worse in their fateful bargain than the burghers of Toronto who ''sold'' their airport to the Canadian government about 300 years later. All Toronto got in return for the Malton airfield that is now Lester B. Pearson International, which currently pays $132-million a year to Ottawa in ground rent, was an old government hangar at the original civic airport on the Toronto Islands.
