South Beach Diet can increase your risk of heart disease, doctor counters

Filed under: Diet, Diet Dr. Mercola, of the "world's most visited natural health website," is soundly criticizing the popular South Beach Diet (which seems to have replaced Atkins as the way to eat). Among his problems with the diet are that its creator, Agatston, says whole grains and fruits are "good carbs." However, people who are trying to control insulin could be adversely affected by thinking they have free reign to consume these foods. Also, South Beach encourages fish consumption, despite dangers from mercury and PCB's, which can cause cancer as well as retard fetal brain development. South Beach's promotion of trans fats also increases dangers of heart disease and diabetes, by claiming that potato chips and french frieds are healthier than baked potatoes. Supposedly, this is because they are fried in trans fats. Not surprisingly, Dr. Mercola has his own diet plan. Just for the record, a dietician I used to work with at a medical school told me South Beach is one of the best diets out there.
