Al-Jazeera launches an English channel

The controversial Arab news channel Al-Jazeera launched an English service Wednesday, proposing to reach some 80 million homes worldwide. Initially planned for 12-hour-a-day broadcast, it will become a 24-hour news channel in January 2007, its officials said.
