Libertarians on the rise?

14th Nov 2006, 17:25 GMT

Yesterday, Insty noted: NEAL BOORTZ notes a rise in libertarian vote totals, and observes: "It is clear that something is terribly wrong in Washington right now. We just went through an election where principles of individual liberty and limited government were not even on the table. I am hard-pressed to name one leading Republican or Democrat who still extols the virtues of freedom, individualism, free markets and limited government." May a suggest a friend of ours fits that bill. He is U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Az. Here's a tidbit from Wikipedia: Flake is opposed to the earmarking process, frequently challenging earmarks proposed by other members of congress. Since May 2006, he has become prominent with the "Flake Hour", a tradition at the end of spending bill debates in which he asks earmark sponsors to come to the House floor and justify why taxpayers should pay for their "pet projects".[2] And there's this from Congresspedia: Jeff Flake is known as one of the most libertarian of the Republicans in the House, often among a small handful of Republicans joining Ron Paul in casting 'no' votes on bills which are supported by most of his party. For this reason, some conservative activists have given Flake the Republican In Name Only (RINO) label [2], while others consider him one of the most consistently conservative members of the House and strongly support him. Which perspective one has on Flake may ultimately depend on which issues one considers most important. From CBS News: This story is about one congressman’s mission to end earmarks that has pitted him against the House, in particular against members of his own party. And there's this from October of this year: A leading Republican critic of special-interest spending earmarks said Tuesday that the GOP risks its congressional majority by defending the practice. Here's a bunch of blog talk via Technorati. Flake is worth keeping an eye on.
