Hip-to-waist ratio better indicator of heart attack than BMI

Filed under: Diet, Prevention Body Mass Index, which has long been used to determine people's obesity, may not be an accurate indicator of risk for heart attacks. According to the BMI, which is calculated by looking at height to weight ratios, most athletes are probably obese. In a study which appeared in last week's Lancet, Dr. Arya Sharma noted that the BMI does not take into consideration where body fat is concentrated. It also does not account for higher body weights due to muscle, which weighs more than fat. I personally was happy to hear about this news, because I have been running for six months; my weight has changed only a little, but I have gone down two pants sizes.
