Appeared in a few indie features (Secret Nation, Understanding Bliss) before his breakout role on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, where he became known for his trademark man-on-the-street rants. Departed after several seasons and turned up on Made In Canada, a scathing sitcom-style comedy set in the Canadian TV industry. Launched the well-received Rick Mercer's Monday Report in January, 2004, which evolved into The Rick Mercer Report for this current TV season.

Briefly became a Canadian TV icon in 1992 as spokesman in a popular beer commercial. Assumed the high-profile title role in the NBC series Ed. Married Maureen Grise, a photo editor at Sports Illustrated, in July, 2004.
